You’ve got a lot on your plate. Work is hectic, you need to make sure your family eats every night, and midterms are fast approaching. It’s totally natural to feel some level of stress while you’re juggling a bunch of responsibilities, and that stress can become overwhelming when things keep piling up with no end in sight.

Managing stress levels is not only important to your overall health, but it’s a big factor in your success at any one task. When you’re stressed, you can’t focus and your performance suffers, leading to even more stress.

Taking a break, going for a walk, or meditating all are great ways to help you decrease your stress. When you’re really busy, though, these techniques may not be an option, and you instead need a stress-reliever you can take with you wherever you go. Thankfully, there are a variety of herbs and essential oils that can help you relax and reduce stress naturally.

Lavender

The plant that’s the basis for calming bedtime sprays and sachets is perfect for helping you calm yourself down and get a moment of zen in an otherwise busy day. Lavender comes in many forms, including dried for sachets, essential oils, and steeped in tea. Choose your preferred form, take a deep breath, and take a moment to relax.

Chamomile

Another popular bedtime tea component, chamomile can relax muscles, calm nerves, and help you sleep. Brew yourself a big cup of chamomile tea and drink up: Chamomile is usually found in herbal, non-caffeinated teas, so you won’t get that jittery feeling you may get with other teas.

Tulsi, or Holy Basil

l

This herb is not well-known to many, but it has powerful stress-reducing properties. You can get it powdered for cooking, as a tea, or in capsule form. Tulsi has antioxidant properties, so regular use can keep your immune system strong to help you fight off those nasty bugs that can crop up when you do get stressed.

Lemon Balm

Part of the mint family, lemon balm is great as a tincture, in tea, or even infused in water. Keeping a bottle of lemon balm-infused water with you when you’re studying or at work is a healthier alternative to sodas or coffee and to balance your brain.

Cedarwood

.

This aromatic, earthy oil helps increase serotonin production in the brain, which relaxes you and regulates your mood. Keep a small bottle of cedarwood oil in your bag and take a quick sniff when you’re feeling stressed out, or rub a few drops into your wrists.

Grapefruit

This citrus fruit’s scent can give your mood a little lift, help wake you up, and clear out any brain fog you may have from that late night of studying. Add a few drops to your shower and cover the drain for a quick pick-me-up stress reliever in the morning, or diffuse it in your room.

Eucalyptus

Instantly clear your head – and knock out any congestion you might have – with a whiff of eucalyptus essential oil. Boil a pot of water, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, turn off the heat, and cover your head and the pot of water with a towel – carefully! – for a quick aromatic infusion. Bonus: The steam will help cleanse your pores, so you’re less likely to get those stress breakouts!

Rose

This essential oil isn’t just for Grandma’s perfume. Add a couple drops to your wrists and inhale to enjoy the calming, peaceful vibes from this essential oil.

Ylang Ylang

This essential oil can either help you feel calmer if you’re stressed, or give you a little boost of energy if you’re tired. If you’re experiencing anger-induced stress, dab some ylang ylang oil on your wrists, neck, feet, and back to help you chill out.

Peppermint

Not only is peppermint great for calming you down when you’re feeling a little riled up, it also promotes memory and mental clarity. Sucking on a peppermint candy while studying and again while taking an exam can help trigger connections in your memory and boost performance.

While essential oils and herbs can help you feel less stressed and improve your sense of balance during busy times, finding other ways to reduce your stress and cope with your workload are important to your long-term health. Use our suggestions as a jumping-off point in your journey for balance and success. Good luck!
